Another gorgeous day in the Netherlands so we spent it at Kinderdijk (the World Heritage Site with all those windmills). Paul graciously lent us his car and the drive took about one and a quarter hours. It turned out to be a lovely walk amongst canals and windmills with the occasional close encounter with a bike. In fact, at one point during our return saunter, a dude in a vest repeatedly blew his whistle to warn pedestrians to make way for the 40 or so cycling retirees following close behind. It took a solid 5 minutes for them to pass. In the meantime, we had another photo shoot. While I was taking a picture of Caroline and trying to encourage her to smile by saying that she is beautiful, an older German man walked by and started to sing "You are so beautiful..." We giggled and he stopped and said, "Well, she IS!"
We grabbed some sandwiches at a little cafe called Cafe "De Klok" and held a lengthy and very intellectual discussion about why no one here seems to use or need napkins. Needless to say, it has taught us to devour our food a bit more graciously. The highlight of the day was returning Paul's car unscathed. And, since we managed to do that successfully, he made burgers on the grill for us and some of their friends. Again, no weight loss in our futures but a perfect end to a perfect day!

| Too many windmills for one day |

Too many windmills? Sounds like too much fun! The other 8 shoes are missing you and enjoying the daily updates. I had the kids pose in front of the Reisterstown water tower, but it just didn't look as cool as your windmill pics!
ReplyDeleteThe water towers here are underground...no water shortage here. You could have Abby and CJ stand in front of the water tower with pinwheels.
ReplyDeleteCaroline took a video of one of the working windmills--the blades where really booking! I want to have her upload it so Abby and CJ can see. it is very cool.
We are heading to Utrecht tomorrow. Hoping for another cloudless day. Tanja said that, according to the news reports, Holland is the warmest place in Europe right now! Kids are pissed because we made them pack long pants and shirts. Somehow, the due diligence we did in checking the weather in the first place (which indicated 60 degrees all week) is brushed aside and we are now blamed for mother nature's quirks.
Six of the wooden shoes were at the Baltimore County Northern Landfill today. What a treat that was. Beautiful birds flying everywhere, the biggest diesel bull dozers you have ever seen, and the kindest of folk with an accent like no other. All topped off with the most unpleasant scent of decay. Miss you guys. I need more Lee please, gotta have more Lee.
